We’re honoured to be featured in one of the UK’s most prestigious wine publications, Decanter in an article celebrating “The Bold Explorations of Victoria’s Next Generation Winemakers.”

The piece highlights a movement across Victoria, where innovative, terroir-focused winemakers are reshaping what Australian cool-climate wine can be. Among them is Ocean Eight’s own Mike Aylward, recognised for his commitment to reading the land and refining the distinct character of the Mornington Peninsula.

A Decade of Evolution on the Mornington Peninsula

Over the past ten years, Mike has re-evaluated every detail of Ocean Eight’s vineyards, from soil health and canopy management to pruning and clone selection. His goal: to create wines that speak of place, revealing the subtle layers of Red Hill’s maritime climate and volcanic soils.

“You need to put time into a site to understand what’s working and what isn’t… You must read your site carefully, and tweak it to make it the best it can possibly be.”
— Mike Aylward, Decanter interview

These thoughtful adjustments, grafting different clones, adapting trellising systems, and managing soil structure, have redefined the quality and precision of Ocean Eight’s Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris.

Crafting Wines that Reflect Time and Place

At Ocean Eight, we believe great wine is grown, not made. The Mornington Peninsula’s cool coastal breezes and long ripening season allow fruit to develop intense flavour while maintaining natural acidity.

Our approach has always been to let nature lead, minimal intervention in the winery, sustainable vineyard practices, and a deep respect for the unique fingerprint of each vintage.

The result? Wines that are elegant, pure, and distinctly Ocean Eight.
