The Aylward family first planted roots in Red Hill in the mid-1990s, chasing the potential of the Peninsula’s cool climate. Guided by soil scientists and viticulturists, Chris and Gail Aylward established one of the most carefully planned vineyards of its time, while their son Michael developed a passion for viticulture and winemaking.

Michael’s early career at Kooyong saw him learn from some of the best in the industry, while Kooyong itself quickly rose to acclaim with its award-winning Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. When Kooyong was sold in 2004, Michael embarked on his own winemaking journey — one that would give birth to Ocean Eight.

Ocean 8 wines have long been enjoyed for over 15 years at Donovans – with many more to continue! – Mike’s wines pair beautifully with our food and can equally be enjoyed by themselves without food! From The Verve Chardonnay with our Leader Prawns, the pinot gris with our seafood linguine to the depth and gentle tannins of his Pinot Noir with our T-Bone

Beginning with a small but acclaimed Pinot Gris, Ocean Eight soon expanded to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and sparkling, sourced from meticulously chosen vineyards in Tuerong and Red Hill. Today, Michael and his team continue to craft wines that express the elegance and character of the Peninsula, cementing Ocean Eight as one of the region’s leading producers.
